State what DNA stands for
DNA stands for, deoxyribonucleic acid
Describe in detail the structure of a DNA molecule
DNA is made up of nucleotides, the bases are held together by a backbone of phosphate. The shape of a DNA cell is called a double helix, it looks similar to a ladder with the sides of the ladder made up of phosphate and each rung made up of 2 bases, the bases twist and are connected to the backbone. Only certain types of nucleotides can fit together.
A and T
G and C
Identify the 4 bases that are found in DNA
Adenine (A)
Thymine (T)
Cytosine (C)
Guanine (G)
State where in a cell DNA is found and what form
The DNA is found in the nucleus of the cell, the DNA is very tightly packed in the form of a Chromosome. The DNA unravels itself and coils back up depending on which process is taking place.
Describe when DNA was first discovered
DNA was discovered by a Swiss biochemist- Frederich Miescher, it was discovered in the late 1800s. DNA was considered unimportant as it was so small and couldn’t be responsible for carrying out these tasks so they thought it was performed by proteins. Then in 1953 James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin figured out the importance of DNA and the double helix formation.
Explain what an Amino acid is
Amino acids are used to build proteins in your body,
Amino acids have a 2 carbon bond, and have 2 groups the first group is the Carboxyl group (made up of carbon and oxygen) the other group is the conjugate base. The acids combine together to make long chains, these are called proteins. There are 9 essential Amino acids which are, Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, and Valine
